After CASE 01 – SEELEN’S NEGATIVE WALL BOX WITH BRUSH SEAL This case relates to a coal fired steam boiler in a power plant in Europe. The boiler operates with negative pressure at the flue gas side. Furthermore, the boiler is equipped with eight (8) long retractable soot blowers. Due to operation problems caused by air influx; frequently failure of the soot blowers and high operation and maintenance costs the management has awarded a pilot project to Ingenieurbüro J. Seelen GmbH which comprises the supply and erection of Seelen’s negative wall box with brush seal as a trail to mitigate air influx during normaloperation and flue gas/ash efflux in case of overpressure buildup in the boiler, which happens occasionally during a breakdown. When suchsituation presents, the whole surrounding ends up covered by ash creating an unsafe environment for the personnel. During commissioning of the modification the lance has been forwarded for about 1.5 metre and then moved backwards to show the effect ofthe brush seal which could be clearly seen in the pictures 01- c thru e. Besides keeping air outside the boiler the brush seal removes foreign material from the lance maintaining the surface clean and smooth. Based on the results achieved, Ingenieurbüro J. Seelen GmbH has been awarded a contract to replace all the soot blowers in question. The pictures below show the situation respectively before and after retrofitting of the soot blowing system.
